report on thursday morning blockades and current info (friday)

We met at 7am at Gare Riquier to go to blockade the conference, a decision had been taken the prevoius night that those militants that were prepared to confront the police would take the east side of the conference, whilst the others would take the west side.

I was in the group that would confront, so around 1500-2000 of us marched toward the Acropolis building down avenue de la republique, intially it seemed that the police lines were suprisingly weak, though of course we knew many reinforcements lay waiting where we couldn`t see. A few barriers were dismantled and charged, but the rest of the march were still coming up the road and so people retreated to wait for reinforcements, as we reached the streets that led to the entrance, police opened fire with teargas, this was really strong, and hurt like hell!!! The march split into sections, they included basque country activists, international socialists, LCR communists, ATTAC, anarchists and others these kept overlapping as we retreated and composed ourselves for another attempt to break the police lines, this continued for around 2 hours we were gassed many times and percussion grenades were used to.

Apparently comrades on the east side were also teargassed althought they didnot attempt to break police lines;

A decisicion was then taken to retreat and march through the centre of Nice, which we did chanting as we went through the streets the CRS followed and gassed us again. Slowly we made our way up to the sports centre where the night before we had, had a rally, we arrived there and various speakers spoke of the action and various chants happened, one of my favorties was the french one- ``Tous ensemble, tous ensemble - oui, oui!`

We then went to leave as we knew the fascists were to march across the other side of town, as we went down the road several buses of CRS riot police were getting ready, they then attacked the sports hall and teargassed it, this then lead to various events of which I only know second hand, but I know that demonstrators attempted to negotiate with police, and were fired on with teargas again, a water cannon was brought in and cars were overturned in an attempt to protect people.

Currently there are small (300 or so) demonstrations at
square garibaldi against the police violence and repression. Graffiti is being washed off the buildings as several banks were attacked and daubed with anti-capitalist slogans as were many sexist advertisements and jewellery shops.

What is the focus of the Nice demonstrations?

It's a pity the demonstrations at Nice are published as if the main target of them are the police and not the EU policies. Personally I don't care a damn about the Nice police but I am quite worried about EU. And I am also worried about a political athmosphere that pictures popular protesters as hooligans that just want some streetfighting. And I would be even more worried if the picture was true. And the more the picture is published the more true it will be, I think, since such pictures are largely self-fulfilling. Take care, do't let it be so.

POLICE PROTECT CORPORATE INTEREST

Obviously the demonstrations are not against the Nice Police, do you think everyone came there to demonstrate against cops?!!! You fail to understand that the police are there PROTECTING corporate interest, and what can the protesters do other then protest this? As for squeamishness in regards to the "violence" of protesters, I went to the Seattle WTO 99 protests, and the MEDIA (another protector of corporate interest, boasting at least 60% ad space) DEMONIFIED about 30 protesters who were dressed in black and breaking things. What is 30 in comparison to 50,000 which was the number of people PARTICIPATING AS A WHOLE IN PEACEFUL protests?

They instead should have thanked their lucky stars it didn't turn into the LA riots. Stop whining, after all, the media wouldn't give a shit if protesters just sat around in the space allotted to them and then went home. Protest does not mean conform to the rules, my friend. Stop being so PC and let everyone fight the 'battle of nice' VIVE LA FRANCE!!!!!!!!

Where is the movement going?
by Simon 1:20am Sat Dec 9 '00

Little worried about where the movement is going. The Hague climate change protests, which I attended, as well as Seattle and Prague, seemed a lot more focussed on issues of the third world and the enviroment. Whats going on at Nice, as characterised by not only the corporate press but also in the article above, seems to be dominated by militant ideologues. (Worried particularly by the coalition building going on with nationalists like ETA. Are we going to see Trotskyists and Anarchists joining up with the National Front next?) Plus needs to be clearer pronunciation of principles as regards the EU rather than just ranting on about Seattle, WTO, globalisation and the police as we can convince everyone that they'll all the same thing. We have to be more sophisticated than that otherwise are going to lose.

lack of politics?

My article above was a reportage of what went on in the part of the attempted blockade I was on, not a political analysis.

As it was there have been a number of meetings addressing the bosses strategy of the EU which in turn lies behind the need to make the world work for Capital.

The real problem in Nice as in the rest of the anti-capitalist demos is how we link the power of working people which you could quite clearly see on Wednesday - and believe me there were well over 100 000 people not the 70 000 that the police estimate- to the more radical activists, it's happening a bit the COBRAS union were on the blockade as were the spanish CGT and Unison from the UK, but it's not enough to beat the police.

But I think Nice was generally good, very few arrests, and a good mobilisation, now lets see if we can take it further.
